Why should you use Treadmill Lubricant?

By Surabhi Agrawal January 10, 2022

Lubricant for Treadmill

Recently, I purchased a treadmill to help me get in shape for the upcoming season. I've been using it regularly and have found that while the frame of my machine is very sturdy and well-built, there has been a level of noise associated with its use that couldn't be explained by the normal sounds you would expect from a running machine.

Based on my research, I discovered that this is when I should have been applying treadmill lubricant.

Lubricating my running machine made my workout more pleasurable.

Here are some of the questions that I investigated while doing research on Treadmill Lubricant.

1. What is treadmill lubricant and what does it do?

Treadmill lubricant is a petroleum-based oil spray that keeps your treadmill running smoothly and quietly. Treadmill lubricant is intended for home use, although it may also be used at gyms and fitness centres where many people use the equipment.

2. What are the benefits of using treadmill lubricant?

By preventing wear and strain in high-friction areas, lubrifying your treadmill may enhance its performance and extend its lifespan. The manufacturers recommend that you oil both sides of your rollers to optimize their performance and extend the life of the machine.

3. How often should you lubricate your treadmill and how can you tell if it needs it?

The frequency in which you should use a treadmill lubricant will differ depending on the amount of use your machine gets. Generally, most experts agree that running equipment should be oiled once every six months or whenever it becomes noticeably loud. Also, if you notice a decrease in performance, this is another sign that your equipment may benefit from good lubricating.

4. How do you lubricate a treadmill?

Because the treadmill's belt is powered by the user's weight, it doesn't require an electrical connection to function. However, friction may develop over time. The moving components rub against one another as you walk or run, generating friction that erodes the plastic components and creates noise. This is where treadmill lubricant comes in handy.

Your treadmill's owner's manual will have specific instructions for applying the product.

However, here are some general tips to consider:

  • Spray in a circular motion to prevent streaking or glopping of the lubricant.
  • Do not over-lubricate, especially when applying spray lube with a trigger dispenser.
  • Excess oil buildup on the belt can actually trap dirt and debris, which is bad for your machine.
  • Keep all surfaces clean by wiping excess oil away with a dry cloth or paper towel.
  • Wipe off any remaining residue before running or walking on the treadmill.

5. What happens if you don't use a treadmill lubricant?

If you don't use a treadmill lubricant, the components will get hotter and wear down faster. This creates more noise as well as security concerns for those who will be using future treadmills.

6. Are there any risks associated with using treadmill lubricant?

Treadmill lubricant does not have the same dangers as a petroleum-based oil spray. However, if too much is used or if it gets on your treadmill's belt, it can cause issues. It isn't necessary to over-oil your treadmill; nevertheless, doing so will result in the belt slipping and shortened life span.

Treadmill lubricant also increases the slip hazard on your treadmill's belt. This makes it more important than ever to wipe off any excess oil that gets onto the running surface. The oils pose no risk to the belt, but they can make it extremely slippery. You could slip and fall if you step onto a treadmill that's covered in oil.

Finally...

I hope that I have provided enough information here for anyone looking to find out more about treadmill lubricants.

Remember replacing a treadmill belt may cost more than preventing it by using this simple product. The lubricant will not only avoid damage but also eliminates any complications and future wear & tear.

And as someone who has recently used this product, I can say that it is effective at improving your treadmill's performance and in turn yours!
